Once again the role of media in covering the terror attack is being scrutinized post Pathankot terror attack. Some of the security experts alleged that non-stop coverage of terror incident helps terrorist and their handlers. In social media people demanded for banning of NDTV alleging that channel aired crucial information which has potential to aid the terrorists. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore issued a statement saying coverage of anti-terrorist operations by news channels must be as per the Cable TV Act, 1995 and advisories issued by the Ministry.

His remarks came in the backdrop of reporting of the anti terrorist operations by some news channels during Pathankot airbase attack. This is not for the first time that Indian media has been under scanner for covering of terror incident. In the year 2008 when   deadly gang of terrorists went on rampage killing scores of people at Mumbai, the Indian media found itself in the firing line, not just of the killers but also of the authorities, for its reportage of the attack. It was alleged that the non-stop coverage of incident, provided vital information to the Pakistani handlers. By using information sourced from continous media coverage, the Pakistani handlers kept on issuing instruction to Ajmal Kasab and his gang. At that time due to the scathing criticisms of media coverage of the Mumbai attack, the News Broadcasters Association decided to unveil self regulatory guidelines for telecast of sensitive events. However no one knows, what is fate of that self regulatory guidelines adopted by the association?  Definitely there are laws as mentioned by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore but news channel should also introspect and try correcting themselves.  While reporting any terror incident they should yield extra caution and don’t air sensitive information. Their reporting should in no way help the terrorists.

A noble gesture

Dear Editor,

So far I have not seen any festival celebration committee in Arunachal Pradesh which does not accept cash money from Chief Guest and Guest of Honour but there is a festival celebration committee which does not accept money from persons who attend celebration either as Chief Guest or Guest of honour that is Si Donyi Festival Celebration Committee of Tagin which celebrates the festival every year on 6th January.

I, as a journalist, attended this festival on several occasions and never found them accepting money from Chief Guest or Guest of Honour. It’s truly a noble gesture. I wish festival celebration committees of other communities also try to know as to why the celebration committee of Tagin does not accept money during the Si-Donyi celebration from guests and if possible they  should  follow this noble gesture.

To me, joining any festival without contribution of money signifies more sanctity of the celebration. In many occasions I have seen some guests were boastfully giving huge amount of  cash money to festival celebration committees amidst loud applaud from public but immediately it’s value gets vanished in the air because demonstration of cash money has no sanctity with originality of the respective festival. At the same time Tagin does not serve any wildlife meat during the celebration of Si-Donyi which reflects a sense of respecting every living being on this earth. Truly it is also a very good gesture with an objective. In some cases I found Chief Guest & Guest of honour were offered with wildlife meat during the celebration in order to please them which is totally contrary to promotion of wildlife. I wish, in time to come other tribes may also try to learn good initiatives from Tagins.

Counter view

Dear Editor,

Mr. Sujit De’s letter titled “Need a resolution to rid a baggage of prejudice” published on January 5 is extremely well-intentioned. He deserves highest congratulation for his stand against casteism which is indeed the greatest evil plaguing the country. Unless we get rid from the medieval dark caste system, no amount of success in attaining Mars orbit will make our nation an “elite” one.

However, despite honouring Mr. De’s well intentions, I differ with him as far as the issue of surname is concerned. He refers to a school mate of him bearing the surname ‘Mal’ who had to stomach insults and bitter comments revolving his surname. And Mr.De concludes that age-old caste system is responsible for it! Now let me cite the case of my cousins whose family bears the surname ‘Malkhandi’. My cousins also had to face unfathomable taunts and abuses during their schooldays revolving their surname. Now comes the punch line --- My cousins are Brahmins, residing in the highest echelon of the laggard caste system! So it can be easily concluded that mocking certain persons by exploiting their surnames bear no relationship with caste system. Brahmins to Dalits --- all can be made objects of jokes if they have to bear uncommon surnames. Actually all depends upon the mindset of individuals. People who are evil in nature will abuse anybody by exploiting any peculiarities. One of my office colleagues reside in a village named ‘Kelomal’. Often many persons make fun of him by exploiting the name of his village. During my childhood days in Bihar, the Hindi-speakers used to mock at Bengali words and expressions. So people should learn to rise above such narrow mindset of humiliating others. Why is a mere surname being made a scapegoat?

Mr. De also states that surname fans nepotism. Yes, but linguistic, provincial and religious identities also give birth to all norms of bias, prejudice and favouritism. Now will Mr.De demand that henceforth, people have to hide their religious or ethnic identities as well? Will we identify ourselves as Mr.Sky Blue or Ms. Rose Fragrance? Again the mindset of people is the only factor. Those who believe in humanity will never favour or discriminate against another based on his/her surname, region, religion, language or nationality. And those who possess divisive ideology will continue to remain biased even with/without usage of surname. So the urgent need arises to strictly ensure that all appointments or interviews be conducted in neutral and transparent way.

Mr.De has also taken the cudgel on behalf of the bride who has to change their surnames due to patriarchal demands of the husband’s family. There exists innumerable couple who lead extremely happy cordial marital lives even though the wife has discarded her paternal surname post marriage. Also there exist innumerable couple who are always at loggerheads with each other and lead extremely violent relationship even though the wife has retained her original surname!  Marriage is an ideally a noble holy relationship where the couple are expected to traverse the path of life together through mutual affection and sacrifice. Change of surname or status quo regarding it is absolutely immaterial.

I am sure Mr.De will continue to fight against casteism and try to eradicate this evil system from the soil of India. But he should redirect his energy and time in a more constructive purposeful way instead of dwelling in mere surname issue only.

DC Jha doing commendable job

Dear Editor,

A young energetic, honest and sincere IAS Officer of the day is no other than Ravi Jha DC Tirap. Within a short span of his induction in the prestigious IAS, the young man has done the kind of work which others could not able to do in their entire career. Jha have proved himself as efficient, trustworthy, hardworking and role model for others. Most of our tribal officers do not want to be posted at TCL districts. But sir you have proved them wrong. Registering the entire group D Staff of DC office Tirap under the Prime Minister Bima Yojna a brain child scheme by our most respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paying the whole 1st installment from his own salary, enrolling the UTPS of Tirap Jail under APCMUHIS etc are the yeoman and commendable jobs done by the young officer. Thanks to all departmental staffs and public of Tirap who have given cooperation in this regard. I personally appeal to the govt. of Arunachal, if any; I doubt there is govt. as of now to recommend DC Tirap for the presidential gold medal award to the GOI for his outstanding and excellent performances. Congrats Ravi Jha and the people of Tirap who got a knowledgeable and a performer DC. Keep on young man.

APPSC cannot be trusted

Dear Editor,

This is in response to the news published in your daily dated 29th Dec, 2015 regarding the demand of Arunachal Teacher Aspirants Forum (APTAF) for the placing PGT & TGT posts under APPSC.

In this regard, I would like to highlight that recent examination conducted under APPSC has been highly controversial. It has led to the suspension of some APPSC members & staffs due to unfair means of leakage of question paper. There was dharna and hunger strike against commission which the whole state witnessed. We have seen that APPSC is not conducting free & fair examination. Therefore APPSC cannot be trusted anymore. I therefore request to choose the best and re-think before going to any democratic movement.

Yours,

On behalf of Aspirant Candidates
